Back to School season is looking a little differently this year. (Major props to all of the teachers, and parents who just became teachers) We thought we’d join in the fun with some back to school business basics.

1. First impressions matter. It takes less than 7 seconds to form a first impression. This is why brand consistency is important- you never know when a new customer will be meeting you for the first time. You want to make sure they meet the real you. In this digital age, your website is one of the most important introductions. Websites should be audited annually to ensure that they are keeping up with your current business brand and messaging.

2. Products profit more quickly than people. While many industries are service-based, there is a limit to the amount of service that can be provided. It is a continual process to manage the revenue flow to bring in the necessary help to grow bigger profits. Productizing is a great way to increase profits more quickly. There are many e-commerce platforms that can help you implement recurring revenue flows, whether it’s selling physical products, digital products, or online services.

3. Branding, Business Strategy, and Marketing are separate but connected. Many times businesses will focus on one of these three categories while neglecting the rest. They all go together. Your brand is who you are- this is what shapes everything else, and it’s important to have clarity on your brand so that you are successful in your marketing and business strategies. Your business strategy is how you plan to make money. What is your business model? What is your hiring process? What is your plan to scale? This is where you create a roadmap to your specific success metrics. And marketing is telling people that you exist. Once you know who you are and what you’re doing, you can get to know your audience and meet them where they are at.

4. Remember your ‘WHY’. What is your mission? Why did you start? Why do you show up every day? Your audience may initially be invested in your product or service, but ultimately it’s your why that creates an ongoing relationship. Tap into the why behind the what, and invite others to join you.
